For Parents of College Students

Help your student begin college with a church home, real friendships, and a plan to stay close to Jesus.

College brings new freedom, new pressure, and new questions. One of the best ways to support your student's spiritual life is to help them identify Christian community before the semester gets busy, meet ministry leaders when you visit campus, and make a simple plan for their first weeks at Penn State.

College is also a transition in relationships. Parents are used to parenting, while students are stepping into adulthood and learning to make their own decisions. We want to know students directly as young adults, not merely through their parents, while also getting to know parents as adults who care deeply and can support that transition well.

Three ways to support your student

  • Visit when you come for tours, orientation, or move-in so your student can connect names and faces, and start with a real place to belong.
  • Prepare before the semester starts by talking through worship, friendship, Bible study, and healthy rhythms for the first month of college.
  • Encourage direct connection so your student can build relationships and take spiritual ownership as a young adult.

Visit while you are in town

Visiting a new church or ministry for the first time can feel like a lot for any student. When you come for campus tours, orientation, or move-in, use that time to help your student meet people, see the ministry environment, and take a simple first step before classes and schedules begin to compete for attention.

Introduce your student to real people

Meeting a pastor, ministry leader, or student ahead of time makes the first return visit much easier.

  • Put a name and face to the place.
  • Lower the anxiety of showing up alone later.
  • Help your student picture belonging, not just attending.

Attend something together

If the timing works, attend worship or a gathering while you are visiting campus.

  • Experience the atmosphere together.
  • Give your student a clearer sense of what to expect.
  • Turn a vague option into a concrete next step.

Ask about a quieter first connection

Some students are shy, reserved, or overwhelmed at first. We are glad to help them connect one-on-one with a pastor, leader, or student before they try a larger gathering.

  • A gentle first step for timid or introverted students.
  • Helps students connect personally as young adults.
  • Can begin with one conversation or one introduction.

Prepare before move-in

Parents often help students think about housing, finances, and schedules before college starts. Spiritual life deserves the same kind of practical attention. A simple plan made early can make it much easier for a student to stay connected once campus life accelerates.

A simple goal
First 2 Weeks

Help your student choose one gathering to attend, one contact to save, and one step toward Christian friendship before the semester settles into routine.

Before arrival

Use the weeks before college starts to build clarity and lower friction.

Talk
Ask now

Talk about spiritual rhythms

Ask where your student hopes to worship, who might know their name, and what habits could help them stay grounded in Jesus.

Plan
Choose one

Make a first-month plan

Decide on one worship service, one ministry event, or one meeting to aim for during the opening weeks of the semester.

Save
Contact ready

Keep the information handy

Save contact details before move-in so your student does not need to search for help in the middle of a stressful week.

Ways to encourage throughout the year

Support does not need to be heavy-handed to be meaningful. Gentle, steady encouragement often helps most.

Pray with focus

Pray that the Lord would keep your student close to his Word, protect them in temptation, and give them healthy Christian friendships.

Check in naturally

Ask about community, stress, worship, and spiritual life in the same normal way you ask about classes, roommates, and everyday life.

Send encouragement

A short text, handwritten note, or care package can remind your student that they are loved, remembered, and not alone.

Notice stressful seasons

Follow up during midterms, relational strain, loneliness, or disappointment, not only after obvious successes.

Give them space to connect directly

Many students need enough space from their parents to actually choose to get involved. It often helps when they can build direct relationships with pastors, leaders, or other students as young adults making their own decisions.

Encourage without controlling

Parents cannot live their student's faith for them, but they can help keep spiritual life visible, hopeful, and worth prioritizing throughout the college years.

Three practical ways to help

Choose the response that best fits where your student is right now. Parents matter, but the goal is direct connection between students and the people who will know them here.

Help them take one first step

Many students do not need a perfect long-term plan first. They just need help making one concrete move.

  • Send one text.
  • Attend one gathering.
  • Meet one leader or student.

Ask for a one-on-one connection

Some students connect better personally before they are ready for a room full of strangers. We are glad to help with a quieter first introduction.

  • A good fit for shy, reserved, or overwhelmed students.
  • Helps students connect directly as young adults.
  • Can begin with one coffee, one conversation, or one introduction.

Pray and partner over time

It is also meaningful when parents come to know and trust the ministry over time. Some eventually choose to support Trailblazers financially, supporting this church the way they would support their own home church.

  • Pray for courage, friendship, and spiritual depth.
  • Stay connected as adults navigating an important transition.
  • Consider future partnership that helps more students find a home.
